ESSAY WRITING TIPS FOR ESSEC BUSINESS SCHOOL

ESSEC Business School's Master in Management - Grande Ecole Program is one of the most renowned programs ranked #3 by the Financial Times 2019 and ranked Worldwide #4 by The Economist. At ESSEC, the students are given the flexibility to define their study and career path. By doing so, each student has the freedom to customize their curriculum and, thus, their learning experience. The MiM Grande Ecole Program at ESSEC has produced graduates who are now holding notable positions. The program's average duration is two years, and the school offers many internships and apprenticeship opportunities.

The application procedure for ESSEC can be quite challenging for some students because it involves multiple essays and short answers, along with a Motivation Letter. To help you out and get you started, we will suggest some guidelines to write essays and the letter of motivation for your application.

1. What matters most to you, and why? Tell us the values and experiences that have shaped the person you are (maximum 400 WORDS).

Firstly, this is a very open-ended essay prompt as it does not ask you to mention any specific instance but allows you to write about a wide range of experiences that have shaped you throughout your life. To answer this particular question, one must search out experiences that impacted your motive and perspective towards life. This question could lead to different kinds of essays, depending on the person's background.

You can include participation or achievements in school or college events, cultural programs, or any athletic competition. If you have professional experience or involvement in internships, you can keep that as the center of this essay. But this essay is not restricted only to your accomplishments or the activities that you were a part of. You can also write about personal experience with your family or friends if that has significantly impacted your life.

For instance, if you have volunteered for an NGO, and that helped you become more compassionate, you can describe your experience and the skills you gained. You can also talk about your experience in sports and athletics by mentioning how it has disciplined your life and what values it taught you.

You can mention anything in this essay as long as it has shaped your personality significantly. However, one thing to keep in mind is that no matter what you write about, your answer should align with the course you selected and the vision of ESSEC. The relatability and alignment with the course are salient and present your profile as a sorted and planned one. Adding to that, you should be careful while listing your experiences and not trying to make up fictional experiences that did not happen to you. This question is here to understand you as a person, and your essay should provide a gateway for the same.

2. Provide to the Admission Committee any relevant additional information (not already detailed in the rest of your application) (300 WORDS)

This essay primarily asks you - "Is there anything else that you would like us to know?". An applicant must use this opportunity to the fullest and convey any further details to elaborate on particular weaknesses of the profile or further bolster the application by highlighting strengths. For instance, considering the current global pandemic scenario, if you have a lower GMAT score, you can justify your inability to perform better by mentioning the problems you faced with the uncertainty with your classes and examinations. You can also specify any adverse circumstances that led to hurdles in your learning process. On the brighter side, you can deliver more information about your personal life, especially those that did not fit into any other essay. You might have outlined your research paper's title and conclusion in your CV, but if conducting the experiments and your inspiration behind the research is something that you would want to elaborate, go ahead and do that.

You can give an idea of your upbringing, personality, and experiences through this essay. Any other interest like dance, drama, singing, which made you better and changed your thinking could be a plus. Moreover, you can mention any fellowship program you were a part of, which involved visiting any other country or volunteering.

For a more manageable approach, you can complete the other essays and SOP and then address the things that have been left out in this letter. Students often end up writing similar answers in other essays; however, this essay will genuinely help you to stand out and leave a great impression.

3. 1-page document clearly highlighting career objectives and reasons for applying to ESSEC

It is identifiable in the question that you are supposed to discuss your future goals and reasons for choosing ESSEC as the pathway. First, you need to put up a very striking display of your willingness to pursue the program. ESSEC follows a free format for this document, which means there is no specific word limit, and you can edit the margins and font a little, to accommodate the content. However, make sure that the document looks professional and appealing.

A Motivation Letter is a crucial aspect enabling the admissions committee to understand what motivated you to take up a specific career path, your work experience, and what goals you plan to accomplish. It acts as a platform to convey your qualifications and goals in a distinctive yet competitive style. You can begin drafting your letter by starting with an amusing anecdote from when you finally decided to pursue Management. Or you can briefly introduce yourself and then sequentially discuss your academic skills, work experience, and extra-curricular.

ESSEC has various internship and apprenticeship opportunities compared, and it offers excellent exchange programs too. You can go through ESSEC's mission statement and values to understand their vision as well. Mentioning specific and unique features of the college would reflect your diligent school research and increase your chances. Find out more about the courses and faculties through the school website and state how grateful you would be to get an opportunity to learn from them.
